What actually causes data loss?
Data loss happens in a few distinct ways, and the cause affects how recovery is approached.
- Mechanical failure — the read/write heads or platters inside a spinning hard drive physically fail, usually from age, a drop, or running too hot for too long
- Electronic failure — a power surge or faulty power supply damages the circuit board of a drive without harming the platters, which means the data is often still intact
- Logical failure — the data is physically on the drive but the file system is corrupted, deleted, or formatted, so the operating system can't find or read it
- Accidental deletion — files removed by the user, often recoverable if the drive hasn't been written to heavily since deletion
- Physical damage — from liquid, impact, or fire

Here are some of the most common questions we get asked. You might find it helpful to read through.
Not necessarily. A drive that isn’t being recognised by the computer could have a logical failure, an electronic failure, or a connection issue — none of which mean the data itself is gone. Even some mechanical failures leave the data intact if handled correctly. Bring it in and we’ll assess what’s actually happening before drawing any conclusions.
Often yes. A drop that kills the laptop doesn’t always damage the storage drive inside. In many cases the drive is completely intact — it’s the motherboard or another component that failed. We can remove the drive and assess whether the data is accessible. If the drive itself was also damaged in the fall, recovery depends on the extent of the damage.
Not necessarily. Deleted files aren’t immediately erased — the space they occupied is just marked as available for new data. If the drive hasn’t had a lot of new data written to it since deletion, recovery is often possible. The key is to stop using the drive as soon as you realise what’s happened — every new file written reduces the window for recovery.
Clicking from a hard drive is usually a sign of mechanical failure — the read/write heads are failing to find the data they’re looking for. This is one of the more serious failure types and needs to be handled carefully. Stop using the drive immediately and bring it in. Don’t keep powering it on to check if it’s working — each attempt risks further damage to the platters where your data is stored.
Sometimes. Liquid damage affects electronics first — the storage media itself can survive moisture that kills the rest of the device. The sooner you bring it in after the liquid exposure, the better the chances. Don’t try to power it on, and skip the bag of rice — it doesn’t do enough and wastes time. Bring it in as-is and we’ll assess it properly.
