What's actually causing the problem?
Macs have their own failure patterns, and a few root causes account for most of what we see:
- Aging storage — older MacBooks with spinning hard drives slow down significantly over time, and SSDs in earlier models can degrade. An SSD upgrade is one of the most effective fixes for a sluggish Mac
- Thermal paste degradation — the paste that transfers heat away from the CPU dries out over time, causing the machine to run hot, throttle performance, and spin the fans constantly
- Battery wear — MacBook batteries are rated for around 1,000 charge cycles before capacity drops significantly, and they're glued in rather than easily swappable
- Physical damage from drops — MacBook screens and hinges are vulnerable, and even a minor drop can crack the display or damage internal connectors
- macOS software issues — a major update that conflicted with something, a corrupted user profile, or a failed migration that left the system in a broken state
- Liquid damage — MacBooks are particularly vulnerable around the keyboard, and liquid that gets into the logic board area can cause corrosion that shows up days after the initial spill

We’ll assess the damage and tell you honestly what’s salvageable. Liquid damage on a MacBook typically affects the logic board, and the outcome depends on how much got in, where it went, and how quickly you stopped using the machine. The most important thing is to turn it off immediately and not try to power it on again — bring it in as soon as possible. If the machine is beyond repair, we’ll focus on recovering your data.
A full startup disk slows macOS down significantly and can cause crashes and instability. The fix is either freeing up space — removing large files, clearing caches, uninstalling unused apps — or upgrading to a larger drive on eligible models. Bring it in and we’ll assess what’s taking up the space and what the options are.
Depends on the model. Older iMacs with spinning hard drives can be significantly improved with an SSD upgrade — it’s one of the most effective things you can do for an ageing machine. Some iMac models also allow RAM upgrades. Bring it in and we’ll check what’s upgradeable and whether the cost makes sense given the age and condition.
Yes. MacBook screen replacements are more involved than on standard laptops — the display assembly is bonded together on newer models — but it’s a repair we do regularly across MacBook Air and MacBook Pro generations. Bring it in and we’ll give you a quote based on your specific model.
You can attempt some things — software troubleshooting, freeing up disk space, some older Mac upgrades. But modern MacBooks use proprietary screws, glued components, and in the case of Apple Silicon models, components that are paired to the logic board at a firmware level. Attempting screen or battery repairs without the right tools risks damaging the machine further.
