Software issues and troubleshooting Hawthorn

Edward from Buzztime Electronics sits at the Buzztime store counter speaking on the phone while working on an open laptop, with phone accessories and small display signs visible around the counter.

Software problems are some of the most frustrating things to deal with because they’re often invisible — no cracked screen, no obvious damage, just a device that’s behaving strangely, running slowly, or refusing to do something it was doing fine last week. A Windows update that broke something, an app that won’t open, a computer stuck in a loop it can’t get out of — these are things we sort out regularly.

We work on Windows and macOS software issues across laptops, desktops, and Macs. Whether it’s something quick to fix or something that needs a proper dig around, we’ll tell you what’s going on and what it’ll take to sort it before any work starts.

Software problems we see all the time

Most software issues fall into a familiar pattern. Here's what we deal with most:

  • Computer running slowly after a Windows update
  • Device stuck in a restart loop or won't boot past the loading screen
  • Blue screen of death (BSOD) appearing repeatedly
  • Windows or macOS won't update — stuck, failing, or throwing error codes
  • Apps crashing, freezing, or refusing to open
  • Printer or peripheral not being recognised after an OS update
  • Outlook, Microsoft 365, or email not connecting or syncing properly
  • Internet or Wi-Fi dropping out or behaving inconsistently
  • Forgotten password or locked out of a Windows or Mac account
  • Software that worked fine on Windows 10 not running properly on Windows 11
  • Computer making it to the login screen but freezing shortly after

If it's behaving strangely and you can't work out why, call us on 03 9822 3481 — sometimes a quick description over the phone is enough to narrow it down.

What's actually behind the problem?

Software faults usually come from one of a handful of places. The tricky part is that the symptom rarely tells you which one.

  • A Windows or macOS update that conflicted with an existing driver or application — one of the most common causes of sudden, unexplained problems
  • Corrupted system files, often from an interrupted update or an improper shutdown during an install
  • Driver issues — outdated, missing, or conflicting drivers for hardware like printers, network adapters, or graphics cards
  • Too many startup programs loading at once, slowing boot time and overall performance
  • Accumulated junk — temp files, cache buildup, and fragmented storage that slow things down over time
  • Incompatible software, particularly older programs that haven't been updated for newer versions of Windows or macOS
  • Malware or unwanted programs running quietly in the background — see our Virus and Malware Removal page if you suspect this
  • Account or profile corruption causing login failures or a broken desktop environment

One thing worth knowing: Windows 10 reached end of life in October 2025, meaning it no longer receives security updates from Microsoft. If you're still running it, that's worth addressing sooner rather than later.

What we can do for you

Software troubleshooting takes a methodical approach — jumping straight to a reinstall when the actual problem is a single corrupted driver wastes time and loses your settings unnecessarily. We work through the likely causes first, and only escalate if simpler fixes don't hold.

One thing we see regularly: customers who've been putting up with a slow or buggy machine for months because they assumed it meant the hardware was dying. Quite often it's a software issue that's fully fixable — a bad update, a misbehaving startup program, or a driver that's been quietly causing grief since the last Windows update. A bit of time spent on it properly makes a real difference.

  • Diagnosis and repair of Windows and macOS software faults
  • Windows 10 to Windows 11 upgrades, including compatibility checks beforehand
  • Driver troubleshooting and updates
  • Startup optimisation — removing bloat, fixing slow boot times
  • App and software installation, repair, or removal
  • Microsoft 365 and Outlook setup, troubleshooting, and repair
  • Account recovery and password reset for Windows and Mac
  • System restore and clean OS reinstalls where needed — with data backup first
  • Remote support available for some issues — ask us when you call

Between Windows and macOS across laptops, desktops, and Macs, software troubleshooting is a big part of what we do. Ed has 30-plus years of experience across hardware and software, and a lot of the more complex or unusual faults come to him specifically because other shops couldn't work them out.

No Guesswork

We diagnose before we recommend. If the fix is something you can do yourself, we'll tell you. If it needs work, we'll explain what and why before touching anything.

Honest Pricing

Clear quote before any work starts. If it turns out to be more involved than expected, we'll let you know before proceeding — not after.

Software Repair Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most common questions we get asked. You might find it helpful to read through.

It can be either, and sometimes both. Slow performance after a Windows update usually points to software — a driver conflict, too many startup programs, or the update itself causing issues. Slow performance that’s been gradually getting worse over a longer period is more likely hardware-related, often the storage drive starting to fail. We’ll run diagnostics to work out which one it is before recommending a fix. There’s more detail on this in our Laptop Repair and PC Repair pages.

Yes, if your hardware supports it. Windows 10 reached end of life in October 2025 and no longer receives security updates, which means ongoing security exposure the longer you stay on it. Windows 11 has stricter hardware requirements than Windows 10 did, so not every machine can make the jump — it depends on your processor and whether it has TPM 2.0 support. Bring it in and we’ll check compatibility and handle the upgrade for you if it’s suitable.

Yes, this is one of the more common things we see. Depending on what broke, the fix might be rolling back a specific update, updating a conflicting driver, or repairing the affected component. In most cases it doesn’t require a full reinstall. The sooner you bring it in after the problem starts, the easier it usually is to trace.

Always. We back up your data before doing anything that could affect it — a clean reinstall is always a last resort, not a first step. If you’ve already lost files and need help getting them back, see our Data Recovery page.
For some software issues, yes. If the problem can be diagnosed and fixed without needing to physically handle the machine, we can sometimes do that remotely. Call us on 03 9822 3481 and describe what’s happening. We’ll let you know whether it’s something we can handle over the phone, or need to remotely access your device via trusted software or if we need to inspect it physically in-store or at your address.

I hired Buzztime Electronics to help my neighbour Joe who is 90 years old. He had an old computer with a small hard drive storage with less than 350mb memory free memory. Joe couldn’t print anything and had issues saving any documents. Michael from buzztime came home and picked up the computer. They backed up all the contents before upgrading the storage. Michael came back and connected the computer the internet and printer and minimised the change for Joe. It was a good experience and I will use them again.

I had an amazing experience at Buzztime Electronics! My iPhone 11 screen was completely smashed and they fixed it in just 30 minutes. The service was super quick, professional, and the staff were really friendly and helpful. My phone is working perfectly again, and I couldn’t be happier with the result. I’d definitely recommend Buzztime Electronics to anyone who needs fast and reliable phone repairs—they really know what they’re doing! screen saver was also smashed and they do what other competitors do in half the time and much less on the price.Manager was really helpful and understanding of the situation
