Once a year is a reasonable baseline for a device in regular daily use. If it’s a laptop that gets carried around a lot, used in dusty environments, or runs hot, every 12 months is worth sticking to. Desktops that sit in one place tend to accumulate dust faster than you’d expect and benefit from an annual clean. If the device is only used occasionally or is relatively new, every couple of years is probably fine. If you’re not sure, bring it in — we’ll give you an honest assessment.
We check both the hardware and the software. On the hardware side that includes the internal condition of the device, the storage drive health, battery status, thermal performance, and fan condition. On the software side we look at startup programs, OS and driver update status, background processes, and a malware scan. At the end you get a summary of what we found and what, if anything, needs attention.
We can check the SMART status of your drive, which gives a useful picture of its current health and any signs of developing failure. This isn’t a guarantee either way — a drive can show clean SMART data and still fail, and some drives with warnings run for years — but it’s a solid indicator and worth knowing about. Often the devices that “run fine” are the ones that benefit most, because the problems are still small. A laptop that’s running fine but has a heavily clogged heatsink is fine right up until it isn’t — usually at the worst possible time.
